After Michelle Obama’s speech to the DNC, Democrats are ready to get to work to win the November election

CHICAGO (WLS) — Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s message last night was clear: the excitement of this week must be translated into action. Delegates know they have a lot of work to do when they return home.

“When we start to feel tired, when we feel the fear coming back, we have to pull ourselves together, throw water on our faces and what? Then we do something!” she told the crowd.

“Do something” was not just a request, but an order from the former First Lady, with which she gave the Democrats a healthy dose of reality.

“No matter how good we feel tonight, tomorrow or the day after, it will be an uphill battle,” she said.

Obama warned Democrats not to be their own worst enemies. On Wednesday, various factions of the DNC discussed the plan to get voters to the polls.

“The Latino vote is critical in this year’s election, especially in the swing states. In many of these states, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona, Latinos are the deciding factor,” said Michelle Villegas Tapia, national Latino engagement director for the Harris-Walz campaign.

Tapia spoke to delegates about the work ahead.

“We have all kinds of organizing programs. We have field offices, we have digital channels like the WhatsApp channel and our national organizing calls, all these different ways Latinos can get involved,” she said.

And the DNC’s Black Caucus said the key is getting people motivated and registered. Chair Virgie Rollins said it’s time for Democrats to be aggressive and go on the offensive.

“It used to be that if they went too low you’d go up, now you take them straight on, and if they go too low some of us go down with them,” Rollins said.

Texas Delegate Betty Keller has learned from the mistakes of 2016 and knows what she will do to make sure Democrats don’t take a single vote for granted.

“A lot of prayer, and I’m going back to Texas, putting on my tennis shoes and going for a lot of walks,” she said.

But Democratic leaders and organizers are telling delegates their most powerful tool is their mouths, urging everyone in attendance to talk to their families, friends and neighbors about the Harris-Walz ticket.
