Brockton High School has a new cell phone policy – NBC Boston

As children prepare to return to school, some school districts in Massachusetts are asking their students to put their cell phones away — in bags and containers — so they can focus on their future.

While each district decides how to deal with the problem, two schools are taking different approaches to creating cellphone-free zones in their classrooms.

At Brockton High School, students will now use Yondr bags — special bags that keep their phones locked during class, according to Principal Kevin McCaskill.

“We’ve had students ask why they’re being penalized, but others understand why we’re doing it and are willing to try it,” McCaskill said.

At Methuen High School, the new policy requires students to keep their phones in clear containers or pocket boards during class — unless they have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan that specifies otherwise.

The details were discussed at a recent school board meeting.

“They still have their phones with them at lunch, but we don’t want to see them during class,” said Methuen Principal Brandi Kwong. “If it’s not a problem during class, then we’ve solved our problem.”

State-certified psychological counselor Dr. Laura Streyffeler warns that it may be difficult for children to get used to the new rules.

“Most kids only stop using their phones when they are punished,” she said.

McCaskill acknowledges that the transition could be difficult.

“When change happens, it’s hard for everyone, even us adults. There will be some growing pains,” he said.

Methuen’s policy goes a step further and requires students to turn in their cell phones at some school events, such as dances. The principal said at the meeting that the goal is to prevent consequences such as cyberbullying.
