CHICAGO – As the Democratic Party campaigns for the historic nomination of Kamala Harris, the spotlight is on the role of women in politics.

This Democratic Convention is different – ​​the presence of women is enormous, and that number has only increased since Kamala Harris was named the Democratic presidential nominee.

At the forefront of the campaign to bring the DNC to Chicago are three black women.

The majority of delegate activities have taken place between the DNC and McCormick Place, but the committee has organized events to raise money in the neighborhoods.

Like the tours of Little Village, Roseland and North Lawndale, town historian Sherman Dilla Thomas was able to conduct them with funding from the DNC and Tammy Duckworth.

The three women responsible for running the DNC in Chicago are National Committee Chair Hamie Harrison, Convention Chair Minyon Moore and Senior Advisor to the Host Committee Keiana Barrett.

“The selection of vendors that you see here on site navigating through security — that was one of the companies that bid for one of our contracts and won it. They’re a local company. It’s the same as McCormick Place. There’s a vendor expo that has over 77 companies, all from the city of Chicago, offering and showcasing their services and again driving as much traffic into the neighborhoods as possible because our delegates can be busy with their meetings during the day. Many of them have traveled here with their families, so they want to immerse themselves in the city as well,” Barrett said.

Barrett is no stranger to Chicago politics.

She has worked with the communications team of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Rainbow Push Coalition.
