SEC schedule set for 2024-25

The Texas women’s basketball team’s first SEC duel of the upcoming season may remind some fans of a Big 12 battle.

Texas will open SEC play for the 2024-25 season with a game at Oklahoma, the conference announced Wednesday when it released the SEC schedules for each of its teams. The Longhorns and Sooners will meet on Jan. 2, 2025, at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Texas and Oklahoma are no strangers to each other, of course. The longtime rivals are moving from the Big 12 to the SEC together this season. Two years ago, UT and OU shared the Big 12 regular season championship. Last season, Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship during the regular season, while Texas was the last team standing in the Big 12 tournament.

Here is the Longhorns’ conference schedule for the 2024-25 basketball season. According to a team spokesperson, the non-conference portion of UT’s schedule is still being finalized:

  • January 2: in Oklahoma
  • 5 January: against Arkansas
  • January 9: against Alabama
  • January 12: in South Carolina
  • 16 January: in Auburn
  • January 23: against Tennessee
  • 26 January: at Ole Miss
  • January 30: against Missouri
  • February 2: at Texas A&M
  • February 6: against Vanderbilt
  • February 9: against South Carolina
  • February 13: in Kentucky
  • February 16: against LSU
  • February 24: in Georgia
  • February 27: at Mississippi State
  • March 2: against Florida
  • 5 to 9 March: SEC Tournament (Greenville, SC)

Texas will have no shortage of exciting topics to cover in its first SEC appearance. When Texas travels to Mississippi State on Feb. 27, UT head coach Vic Schaefer will face a team he led to NCAA runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2018. This schedule will also reunite Texas with former players DeYona Gaston (Auburn), Aliyah Matharu (Florida), Kyndall Hunter (Texas A&M) and Tionna Herron (Missouri). Texas will play three games against teams from South Carolina and LSU that have won the last three NCAA championships, and Alabama returns to the Moody Center on Jan. 9 after playing UT at the same site in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

And how about renewed rivalries? Texas and Texas A&M have only played each other three times in the last decade and will now be unable to avoid each other. The Longhorns have played their old Southwest Conference rival Arkansas twice since 1991.

Texas and Tennessee, two of the five most successful teams of all time, will also meet for the first time since November 2021 after playing each other in all but one of the previous 38 seasons. The outlier in UT and UT’s schedules over those 38 seasons was due to a pandemic-related cancellation.
