La Vernia ISD approves lower tax rate for 2024-25

Property owners in the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) will pay a slightly lower tax rate for the 2024–25 tax year.

Trustees approved a property tax rate of $1.06190 per $100 of taxable value during their Aug. 19 meeting. That’s less than the current rate of $1.06420 per $100 of value.

The tax rate is made up of 39.5 cents for interest and principal – or debt – and 66.69 cents for maintenance and operations, the county’s ongoing expenses. Although the rate is lower than the current rate, the tax bill for an average homestead could increase by more than $300 due to increased property values.

The new lower tax rate, presented by Chief Financial Officer Belinda Raindl, was used to calculate a defeasance resolution, which was also approved Monday night. The 2024-25 budget, passed in June, had a deficit due to built-in employee retention incentives, which included a $500 stipend. This led to a defeasance resolution.

In addition, the Board stated during the meeting on August 19:

•Heard a bond update from AG|CM Senior Project Manager Jacobo Morales

•Heard a presentation on emergency response protocols from Cliff Hill, Director of Safety and Security

•Approved campus improvement plans as submitted by the district’s campus leaders

•Approved the renewal of the District’s property and casualty insurance through PCAT as submitted; the renewal reflects an increase of 17.9 percent over the prior year due to the hardening real estate markets

•Approval of an intermunicipal tax collection agreement between Wilson County and La Vernia ISD

•Approved a one-year extension of workers’ compensation insurance with Workers’ Compensation Solutions as submitted.
