TravelCenters of America builds charging station for electric trucks in California

The CCS chargers will be operational next year, with the MCS charger to follow in 2026. According to TA, “it will enable ultra-fast DC charging for up to five trucks simultaneously.” The pilot project was launched in collaboration with the California Energy Commission and is intended to be the country’s first publicly accessible charging station for medium and heavy-duty trucks.

The stations are provided by BP Pulse, which TA acquired last year. The megawatt charger will be one of the first the company has deployed. As TA puts it, it has “an integrated microgrid” as the charger draws its energy from roof-mounted solar panels and has 1 MWh of battery storage.

“Strategically located at the intersection of two of the country’s busiest highways, this truck charging station is a prime location for electric truck fleet operators who will be among the early adopters of this technology,” said Debi Boffa, CEO of TA. “We are proud to play a leading role in making this infrastructure available to our fleet customers and other professional drivers.”

“Truck and car charging stations at TravelCenters of America locations are an important part of bp pulse’s strategy to bring ultra-fast electric vehicle charging to major cities and along major highway corridors across the U.S.,” said Sujay Sharma, CEO of bp pulse Americas. “This project underscores bp pulse and TA’s commitment to supporting fleet customers and is just the beginning of our truck charging efforts to build fast and reliable charging infrastructure to support our electric vehicle drivers.”
