The Banyan Group proudly announces the debut of its flagship brand Banyan Tree in Japan with the grand opening of Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto in the heart of Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama district. Featuring 52 luxurious guest rooms, the famous Banyan Tree Spa, natural onsen and two unique dining options, this intimate retreat is the only hotel in Kyoto with a Noh stage.

Perched on a hill just steps from the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto combines traditional Japanese architecture with modern elegance, surrounded by a bamboo forest and framed by the tranquil Higashiyama Mountains. Inspired by the ethereal beauty of Noh theater art and the concept of “yūgen” (mysterious, silent beauty), the hotel offers an enchanting retreat where every element is designed to evoke a sense of grace and quiet wonder.

Designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto’s architecture blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Kengo Kuma’s design draws on traditional Japanese building techniques while incorporating contemporary elements, creating a structure that blends harmoniously with the Higashiyama landscape. The hotel’s façade, a harmonious blend of natural materials such as cypress wood and craftsmanship, evokes the timeless charm of the region’s cultural essence. With its curved windows and open spaces, the design allows the tranquil beauty of the surrounding mountains and lush gardens to flow gently inside, creating a comprehensive retreat where tranquility and nature blend seamlessly. Local artisans have restored the gardens and bamboo grove, promoting biodiversity and reflecting Kyoto’s traditional craftsmanship.

Designed by interior designer Yukio Hashimoto, the hotel’s guest rooms combine traditional Japanese techniques with modern, natural elements and feature large hiba wooden bathtubs, tatami mats, natural wood elements and gold leaf accents to appeal to all five senses and provide a tranquil retreat. Room types include those with panoramic views of Kyoto city and Onsen Retreat Rooms with private onsen baths overlooking the small garden or a tranquil bamboo garden and Noh stage.
