SWAT standoff with escaped Mississippi inmate on Near West Side enters 14th hour

An escaped Mississippi prisoner has been trapped in a restaurant on the city’s Near West Side for more than 14 hours, officials said.

Joshua Zimmerman, 30, was inside a restaurant in the 2300 block of West Madison Street when he barricaded himself, Mississippi DeSoto County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Smith told reporters Tuesday night.

“We know he’s alone in there,” Smith said. “There are no innocent civilians, only Zimmerman is in the building.”

Chicago police said the standoff began around 4 p.m. Tuesday, but did not immediately provide further details.

Zimmerman was charged with multiple crimes, including attempted murder, the sheriff’s office said. He fled the DeSoto County Courthouse before he was scheduled to appear for a hearing on June 14.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service notified Mississippi authorities that Zimmerman was found in Chicago on Tuesday afternoon, but few other details were immediately available, Smith told reporters.

“We’ve been investigating this for 68 days,” Smith said. “So we’re excited to finally have the opportunity to sit down with Zimmerman and get more facts.”

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
