Tucson police dog injured at scene of police-involved shooting

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – A Tucson Police sniffer dog was injured Tuesday, August 20, at the same crime scene near the corner of Sixth and Irvington in Tucson where a police-involved shooting occurred.

Tucson police said it started around 5:30 p.m. when a woman from Rudy Garcia Park called 911. She said a man with a knife was chasing her and her son.

While officers were speaking with the victim, the suspect was spotted near the Laos Transit Center, less than half a mile from the park.

The suspect, whose name was not released, then fled from officers and was found near South Sixth and Irvington.

TPD said that’s when the tracking dog was deployed. The suspect reportedly injured the tracking dog, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled again and officers caught up with him near West Oklahoma Street and South Seventh Avenue.

The TPD said officers tried to get the man to surrender, but when he refused, they tried using less lethal methods.

When that didn’t work, an officer had to catch up to the man. During the struggle, the officer’s weapon dislodged into the ground. The TPD said no one was injured in the shooting.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The TPD said some officers also suffered minor injuries, but nothing serious.

According to TPD, no community member was injured.

The Pima Critical Incident Team will conduct the criminal investigation. The Marana Police Department will lead that investigation, while the Pima County Sheriff’s Department will be secondary. The TPD will conduct a separate investigation to ensure officers followed agency policies.
