Zoë Kravitz talks about wedding plans with Channing Tatum and whether she wants to have children

Zoë Kravitz talks about her relationship with Channing Tatum and her plans for a happy life. In a detailed profile for esquireThe 35-year-old looks back on the path to her directorial debut, Flash twiceand how her fiancé fits into her life.

ET confirmed last October that Zoë and Channing, 44, had secretly become engaged more than two years after rumors of a romance first surfaced. The couple met while working on Flash twice in 2021.

“He is adaptable,” says Zoë esquire about how she and Channing navigate their bi-coastal relationship and how she suffers from insomnia. “I sleep differently when he’s home.”

As Zoë recalls, she had never met Channing before sending the script to his production company. The two exchanged “notes” as Zoë revised the script until it was ready for the producer and star to agree, and the rest is history. At some point after the star had cast his role in Blink twice, But even before filming began, he and Zoë became a couple.

Zoë’s proud dad, Lenny Kravitz, has been a strong advocate for the couple since they went public with their relationship.

At a performance in June at the Zoë Ball and friends In the podcast, the rocker talked about how well Channing has fit into the family since he and Zoë got serious, and even told the host: “We’re getting married next year.”

But Zoë waves it off and suggests that her father took her words too literally. “It’s literally something we said in passing,” she says esquire. “For example, I might have said, ‘Next year would be cool.'”

Although Zoë cannot yet give a wedding date, she told the outlet that she is sure about the couple’s future and that there will likely be no more children.

“For a long time, I felt like there was something wrong with me,” she says. “I was waiting for the light to go on, but it never did. When you’re younger, you think, ‘I can’t have kids. I’m too young! That would be crazy.’ I really had to figure out what I wanted.”

Zoë says her circle of friends has changed as she’s gotten older, as her life has changed with marriage and children. As someone who can’t reproduce, this can feel isolating, she admits.

“For a lot of people, having children is a huge, life-changing event – and I think they should receive a certain level of attention and respect from their community,” she says, adding that she wants the same respect for her achievements that have nothing to do with children. “There’s a lot of pressure on women to have children, and there’s a feeling that they have no purpose if they don’t. But with this film, it feels like I’ve given birth to a child.”

Flash twice is a psychological thriller directed and co-written by Zoë. Channing plays Slater King, a tech billionaire who meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala. He invites her to vacation with him and his friends on his private island, but Frida soon discovers that paradise is not what it seems.

Working on the film became something of an obsession for Zoë. “I would have conversations, but instead of listening, I would think about a scene,” she says of the time she spent editing the film.

And now that the “child” she brought through “a marriage and a divorce, a pandemic and a global shutdown and a budding flame that became a true romance” is being released into the world? “It’s sad and strange,” she says. “It was an obsession.”

But the director tells esquire She is very happy with the end result. And she seemed more than ready to present her creation to the public when she and Channing made their black carpet debut at the Flash twice Premiere on August 8th.

During the premiere, Zoë took “just a second to talk about Channing f**king Tatum.” She read a sweet thank you note dedicated to the film’s star and her fiancé.

“From the production to the performance to the pep talks to holding my head or feet while I cried on the bathroom floor because I thought I had messed everything up, thank you for letting me be a complete obsessive control freak,” Zoë said before the screening at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles. “Thank you for your patience. Making this film with you has been an incredible adventure.”

She continued, “Thank you for trusting me to direct you as a woman. It’s really cool to get to make a movie, but when you get to do it with the love of your life, it’s even cooler.”

Zoë also thanked the other cast and crew who worked on the project.

On the carpet, they each spoke to ET about what it was like working together.

“I think there’s so much trust,” Zoë explained, “and you can go places that you might not be able to go with someone you don’t know so well.”

“So it was a really nice experience to work together creatively,” she added.

For Channing, the chance to act and work under the direction of the woman he loves was an experience that strengthened his relationship.

“It was really interesting because we started as friends and just worked on a project that we both really believed in,” Channing told ET. “When things start from that creative place… you just respect each other’s point of view, you respect each other’s opinion, each other’s life experience.”

“I don’t know what I would do without her now,” he continued. “Everyone said, ‘Are you sure you want to be creative with your partner?’ But actually, I suggest that to almost everyone now, because when you’re on the front lines, you really get to know who that person is and what they mean to you.”

“They say, ‘Okay, I need your perspective now. Tell me what to do, tell me how to do it. Tell me what I don’t know and what I don’t see,'” he added.

Zoë’s romance with Channing is her first since her public split from ex-husband Karl Glusman. The two ended their relationship after 18 months of marriage in 2021. Channing was previously married to his Increase She and her co-star Jenna Dewan were together from 2009 to 2019 and have a daughter together, Everly, 11.

Flash twice will be in theaters on August 23rd.
