A couple sparked debate when they asked their wedding guests to go to a nightclub for the reception – a request one of the guests described as “bizarre”.
In a post shared on the Wedding Shaming forum on Reddit, a woman wrote that she and her husband were invited to a friend’s wedding, for which the friend and his fiancée had booked a fancy villa in an expensive area for the wedding ceremony and dinner. However, since playing music after 9 p.m. is not allowed, the couple decided to forgo music altogether due to financial concerns.
“Instead of dancing and socializing after dinner, the couple asks guests to leave by nine and join them at their own expense to a busy nightclub in another part of town for dancing and drinks,” the woman explained. “They call this plan their reception.”
She noted that the nightclub charges a “high entrance fee.”
“I think this is an incredibly stupid idea and I can’t imagine guests going along with it,” she added. “I thought I’d heard it all, but this is the icing on the cake.”
In the comments, opinions on the idea were divided, with some claiming it was “tasteless.”
“This is WILD,” one person wrote. “Never underestimate the audacity of some people, I guess.”
“This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard,” remarked another. “It’s obviously tasteless. And absolutely bizarre. A really stupid decision.”
“BUT… I almost have to respect the fuss,” they added. “I mean, they had an event that the public was willing to pay an entrance fee for.”
“I would be so happy without the entrance fee,” joked another. “I love being invited to parties. WITH that outrageous entrance fee, I would be making up scandalous stories about how I knew the happy couple…”
One person recalled visiting a local nightclub without knowing that a wedding reception was taking place there.
“I once went to a Great Gatsby themed night at a fancy bar with a nice seating area,” they wrote. “What I didn’t find out until AFTER I paid the price (for entry) was that it was a wedding reception and the couple had opened it to the public to recoup some of the costs but hadn’t informed the other guests. I knew a few people there but not the couple. It was SO WEIRD when random people would come over and ask how we knew the couple.”
