Women’s soccer reaches 1-1 draw at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team scored their first goal of the season to earn a 1-1 tie against the Tarleton State Texans on Tuesday at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.

The Vaqueros (0-1-1) came out with a vengeance and put pressure on Tarleton State (0-0-3) by firing three shots on goal and forcing two corner kicks in the first eight minutes.

The Texans were in the right place at the right time in the 25th.th Minute. As the Vaqueros attempted to clear a ball from the penalty area, Jessica Baires’ shot deflected and rebounded into the goal, giving them a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Vaqueros relentlessly put pressure on the Texans and scored their first goal of the season. Lisa Elowsson found newbie Rubi Ortiz raced across the field. Ortiz then scored with a cutting Redshirt Junior Savannah Frisby who passed the ball past Mikayla Kendall to equalise in the 50th minute.thMinute.

The Vaqueros’ pressure gave them a good chance to take the lead, but Kendall made a diving save to keep the game tied. The Vaqueros finished the game with 11 shots, seven of which came in the second half, and seven corner kicks.

In her first college appearance, freshman Heiddis Emma Sigurdardottir (0-0-1) made five saves to help keep the game tied.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday, August 25th when they visit Rice University at 11 a.m.
