LADONIA, Alabama (WTVM) – Authorities are releasing new details on two incidents in an east Alabama neighborhood: a mobile home fire and an investigation into gunfire behind Ladonia Elementary School.

The shooting led to a light lockdown of the school. Both incidents occurred close together on Monday afternoon.

“We’re pretty sure it started inside and not outside,” said Ladonia Fire Sergeant Michael Truesdel.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Monday, the Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a mobile home fire on Bayview Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters were informed by police that three people may be trapped inside the burning home.

“Shortly thereafter, the homeowners were able to inform us that they were responsible for everyone who was in the house,” Truesdel said.

“Knowing there might be people inside, we immediately called everyone we thought might be able to respond,” said Ladonia Fire Chief David Parker.

At first it was assumed that the house was a total loss. But fire sergeant Michael Truesdel made it clear that this was not the case.

“The building was not a total loss,” Truesdel confirmed. “We salvaged a large portion of it. The building was still standing, as was the roof. We were able to salvage quite a bit of the homeowner’s personal property, personal documents, memorabilia, clothing and the like.”

According to Truesdel, the fire probably started somewhere inside, possibly from electrical wiring.

“When we arrived, there were no flames outside the house. There was only smoke, which suggests it was most likely an interior fire,” he said.

Parker added that the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Regarding the shooting near Ladonia Elementary School, the school was placed on soft lockdown to ensure everyone’s safety. According to Phenix City Police, the shots were fired by a neighbor who was aiming at another neighbor’s dog.
