County sewer service available for first time for properties on Fleming Road in Lahaina: Maui Now
August 20, 2024, 1:19 p.m. HST
For the first time, 29 properties on Fleming Road in Lahaina will have access to Maui County’s sewer system, but there are certain requirements for property owners, according to an announcement.
Property owners must properly dispose of their septic tank or cesspool to the satisfaction of the state Department of Health and obtain permits from the county Development Services Administration.
Access to the county’s sewer system will be possible because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has committed to installing a sewer line in the area of Fleming Road and Malo Street starting this month. The project is part of the sewer service for the nearby Kilohana temporary housing development. Work is expected to be completed in December.
Due to restrictions on working on private property, the Army Corps will install a sewer connection with a surface cleanout opening within 2 feet of the property owner’s front property line. Property owners must ask their plumber to relocate this cleanout opening within 2 feet of the property line on their property.
If relocating the cleanout site on a property is problematic, residents should contact the Wastewater Reclamation Department at 808-270-7417 to obtain approval for the final location.
If you need assistance with the simplified emergency permit process, visit the County’s Recovery Permit Center Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the County of Maui Service Center, 110 ‘Ala’ihi St., Suite 207, at the corner of Hookele and ‘Ala’ihi Streets in Kahului.
