Learn more about trees and the challenges they face at the Tree Symposium

Learn about the impacts of bats and invasive species on trees, landscaping with native trees and more at the Tree Symposium on Friday, Sept. 6, at Spiegel Grove, an arboretum and presidential grounds.

The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. in the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums Auditorium in Spiegel Grove.

Registration fee is $40 per person for non-members and $35 per person for Hayes Presidential members. Lunch is included.

The meeting schedule is:

  • 8 to 9 a.m. – Check-in, coffee and donuts
  • 9 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. – Welcome by Christie Weininger, Executive Director of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
  • 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. – Trees and Bats, presented by Deb Nofzinger, Sandusky County Park District program director.
  • 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. – Climate Change and Trees, presented by Stephanie Miller, regional urban forester for Northwest Ohio.
  • 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Tree tour of Spiegel Grove with John Havens, Presidential Building Manager and Hayes property owner.
  • 12.00 to 13.00 – Lunch
  • 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. – Spotted Lanternfly and Tree Pests, presented by Thomas deHaas, Ohio State University Extension, Erie County.
  • 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. – Native Trees in the Landscape, presented by Tom Mercer, Corso’s Flower & Garden Center.
  • 2:30 p.m. – Conclusion by Stephanie Miller and John Havens
