Man who hit and killed woman near city center sentenced to seven years in prison

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – A man found guilty of killing one woman and injuring another while under the influence of alcohol near Town Center will serve seven years in prison.

On Tuesday, Nathan Poole, a 26-year-old from Chesapeake, was sentenced to four years in prison for manslaughter, two years for maiming and one year for drunken driving.

On August 22, 2022, Poole got behind the wheel after consuming marijuana, prosecutors said. While driving downtown, Poole struck two women: Rosa Blanco and her cousin Concepcion Blanco.

The cousins ​​were leaving a restaurant after celebrating Rosa’s birthday, prosecutors added. They said the women were crossing the street when Poole hit them.

Rosa died at the scene of the accident. Concepcion survived, but had to spend five weeks in hospital and suffered serious, permanent injuries, prosecutors said.

Video surveillance showed Poole’s vehicle rolling over the women without braking, prosecutors noted.

Police said they administered a breathalyzer test that indicated Poole was impaired and found he smelled of burnt marijuana. He admitted to using marijuana the morning of the crash, and a toxicology report showed that the THC level in Poole’s blood indicated “recent use,” police said.
