Police from the 109th Precinct in Flushing are searching for two women who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Queensboro Hill early Tuesday morning.
One of the women was driving a 2015 Ford U-Haul box truck westbound on the Horace Harding Expressway shortly after midnight when she drove over a small curb and struck both a 56-year-old man and a light pole, police said.
The U-Haul driver continued to the Kissena Boulevard intersection, where she collided with a 2015 Honda Accord traveling south toward the Long Island Expressway. The U-Haul driver and her passenger jumped out of the truck and ran west from the scene of the accident onto the Horace Harding Expressway. The passenger was reportedly barefoot, having left her sneakers in the cab of the U-Haul.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and pronounced the man dead at the scene, a New York Police Department spokesman said. The 42-year-old man who was driving the Honda Accord was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where he was in stable condition.
The deceased pedestrian was later identified as David Opiela of 59th Street in Woodside, police said.
No arrests have been made and the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation.
