City and Parish of Lafayette property tax bills could rise – The Current

The tax burden on municipal and church property owners could rise next fiscal year if city and town councils vote in September to increase or maintain current tax rates, a common property tax adjustment known as a “roll forward.”

The City Council will consider allocating funds for public building maintenance, police and fire department salaries, the city’s general fund and more. Rate adjustments before the City Council include funding for the library, juvenile detention center, municipal court and airport, among others.

LCG is facing a tighter budget cycle, rising costs and the Boulet government plans to increase public employees’ salaries to fill vacancies.

By law, property tax rates rise and fall with property values to ensure consistent revenue from year to year. When municipalities “roll over” tax rates, they either reset taxes to the maximum rate approved by voters, thereby increasing the tax burden, or they maintain a new maximum rate set by a decline in assessed property values.

Here is the list of tariff adjustments proposed by the municipality.
