Tech giant introduces unique method to support national parks

As the U.S. National Park Service celebrates its 108th anniversary this week, tech giant Apple is offering new ways to support and enjoy America’s parks. From now through August 25, Apple will donate $10 to the National Park Foundation for every purchase made with Apple Pay on Apple.com, through the Apple Store app, or at an Apple Store in the U.S.

“Every time I visit a national park, I am struck by its extraordinary beauty and incredibly rich history,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in the press release about the initiative. “We are proud to partner with the National Park Foundation to preserve these natural treasures that inspire so many people. Their important work helps ensure that future generations can feel the same sense of awe, wonder and reverence for the planet we call home.”

Aside from the funds, Apple is using its technology to make visiting national parks easier and more enjoyable now and in the future. This fall, Apple Maps will add new features that will allow users to explore thousands of hiking trails in U.S. national parks. It will add more detailed information on trail length, elevation, and route type to help users better organize their adventures. It will also include topographic maps with contour lines and trail details to help users create hiking routes to their liking. It will also support saving and offline access to routes for navigation when cellular service is unavailable.

Apple Watch users aren’t left out either. On August 25, they can join in by completing a 20-minute workout with their Apple Watch. This will automatically qualify them for a limited-edition activity badge and animated message stickers that add a fun and rewarding element to their outdoor activities.

This initiative and technology are a reminder of Apple’s commitment to sustainability and conservation. Apple is now carbon neutral in all of its global corporate activities and has ambitious plans for the future: the company aims to be completely carbon neutral by 2030.
