Women’s Open: Dryburgh wants to win the Solheim Cup in St. Andrews

Gemma Dryburgh is hoping a good performance in this week’s Women’s Open at St Andrews can help her force her way into the European Solheim Cup team to face the USA in Virginia next month.

The 31-year-old from Aberdeen helped Europe defend its title in Spain last year, picking up half a point in each of her two matches as the hosts overturned a 4-0 deficit to earn a 14-14 draw.

Dryburgh no longer has a chance of a place in the automatic qualification and must hope that Suzanne Peterson will be chosen as captain.

“It was a big aim of mine to get back into this team,” she told BBC Sport Scotland. “Hopefully a good week here might earn me a selection.”

“I’m dying to be there and I’ll keep that in mind.”

Dryburgh knows St. Andrews well, but has only played on the famous Old Course once.

“I came here a lot as a child,” she said. “I went to the aquarium and the Himalayas Putting Green, so I have a lot of fond memories.”

“When I was younger, I knew every board under the aquarium and all the facts and figures, but this time I’m glad I can play golf.

“You’d think I’d played here more often, but yes, I’m very excited. Playing at St. Andrews is the most iconic thing in golf.”

“I’ve had it circled on my calendar for a few years now.”
