The Batesville Middle School girls’ cross country won a three-way meet against St. Mary’s (Greensburg) and Columbus Christian on Monday. The Bulldogs scored 23 points, St. Mary’s was second with 28 points and Columbus Christian had 59 points. In the boys’ race, the St. Mary’s Knights took first place with 27 points, Batesville was one point behind with 28 points and Columbus Christian came in third with 59 points.

East Central’s football team, which won the 1994 Class 4A state championship, will be honored in a pregame ceremony before the Trojans’ season opener Friday at St. Leon against Lawrenceburg. Anyone associated with that team 30 years ago — players, coaches, managers and others — is invited to attend the celebration. The 1994 EC team, coached by Hall of Famer Rod Ballart, capped a 14-0 season by rolling over DeKalb 35-0 in the state championship game at the RCA Dome. The Reds beat the Blue Jays 6-3 last night in Toronto. The Reds’ most promising prospect, right-handed pitcher Julian Aguiar, made his major league debut but played no role in the decision. Tony Santillan got the win as a relief pitcher while former Red Kevin Gausman lost. TJ Friedl hit 3 of 4 home runs. Ty France hit 2 of 4 and scored two runs. The second game of the series is tonight. The Bengals and Colts will hold a joint practice today in Cincinnati. The two teams will meet in the final preseason game at Paycor Stadium on Thursday night.

In the car race, Tyler Reddick narrowly beat William Byron to win the NASCAR Cup race at Michigan International Speedway in overtime, which was postponed due to rain.
