Wedding planner tells us that Zooey Deschanel’s dress could exceed all of Jonathan Scott’s expectations

Jonathan Scott was instantly obsessed with Zooey Deschanel when they first met on an episode of “Carpool Karaoke.” Now, the “New Girl” actress is gearing up for her next role as the new bride to one half of the famous HGTV Property Brothers (he’s the clean-shaven twin). The couple’s wedding date was still unknown in August 2024, though Scott announced it… sort of. He posted a video to Instagram holding up a map supposedly showing the date and location, which was quickly obscured by a shadow meant to represent the total solar eclipse. This hint has only made fans (us included) even more curious about the details — including the dress Deschanel will wear when she walks down the aisle.

To find answers, The List consulted Lisa Lafferty, a luxury event and wedding planner based in Southern California. Of Deschanel’s signature aesthetic, Lafferty predicted, “In my experience, brides with their hipster style often opt for vintage-inspired lace dresses or flowing bohemian designs. They prefer earthy tones for their makeup and natural, wavy hair rather than a very formal updo, creating a relaxed and effortlessly chic look that perfectly complements their style.”

But don’t rule out that Deschanel might opt for a satin princess gown or a skintight mermaid dress. “It’s often surprising what type of dress a bride chooses for her wedding day,” Lafferty said. “Many people start their dress shopping journey with a clear idea of what they want and then decide to go with something completely different and unexpected!”

Will Zooey Deschanel’s wedding dress be more unusual?

Zooey Deschanel’s outfits have sometimes been below expectations, but she wants to look her best for her upcoming wedding. Her fiancé, Jonathan Scott, plans to honor his Scottish heritage by wearing a kilt to the ceremony (though he hasn’t decided if he’ll go all traditional and forgo underwear). Deschanel’s son from his first marriage, Charlie Wolf Pechenik, will likely wear a kilt as well. So how does a bride with a decidedly kitschy look fit with a groom who looks like a cast member from “Brigadoon”?

It may not be as difficult as you think, says wedding planner Lisa Rafferty. She exclusively told The List: “Yes, the groom’s style can influence the wedding dress, and many couples aim for a cohesive look that reflects their personalities. However, in my experience, both partners meet in the middle to complement each other, but still feel comfortable and show off their own personal style preferences!”

According to Edinburgh-based retailer Scotland Shop, a simple “touch of tartan” is all it takes for a bride to look appropriate for a Highland-style wedding. If the Harold and the Purple Crayon actress is sold on the boho look, she could opt for a matching lace or gauze dress and pair it with a sash, bolero, shawl, shoes or clutch in a pattern that matches Scott’s. Or she could surprise everyone – including the groom! – by wearing an all-plaid skirt or dress.

Jonathan and Zooey may keep the wedding simple – but unique

Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel’s relationship will eventually turn into marriage. Both have been married before (this is her third attempt and his second), and they’re in no rush to do it again until the time is right. In March 2024, Deschanel told ET that plans were “slow … but (the process) is underway.” Event expert Lisa Lafferty sees this as a sign that they aren’t planning a spectacular Kardashian-style ceremony. “Given that Zooey and Jonathan’s wedding plans have been kept under wraps, this could indicate that they’re planning a small, intimate celebration with simple decor and a focus on close family and friends,” she exclusively told The List.

For Scott, creating a beautiful space should be a breeze, as his design and renovation work with his twin brother Drew has earned them fame and a permanent home on HGTV. In their new HGTV series, “Backed By the Bros,” the pair serve as mentors to house flippers looking to get the best return on their renovation investment. “If one of the partners has interior design knowledge, they’re already one step ahead,” said Lafferty. “Interior design knowledge allows them to understand what patterns work together, visualize potential uses of space, make the most of light, and stay up to date on current trends and styles versus outdated ones!”

Regardless of the wedding date, dress, venue and number of guests, one detail has already been decided. Scott told ET he wanted to have bagpipers among the musicians on their special day.
