DESRI and EPE begin work on 130 MWac solar and storage power plant in the USA

DE Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI), in partnership with El Paso Electric (EPE), has begun construction of the 130 MWac (megawatt alternating current) Carne solar and storage project in Deming, New Mexico.

The Carne project is DESRI’s second project in Luna County following the successful opening of the Alta Luna solar plant in 2017.

The new development will strengthen the supply of sustainable energy in the Southwest United States and contribute to EPE’s goal of achieving 80% clean energy by 2035 and 100% by 2045.

Under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with EPE, the Carne solar and storage project will begin commercial operations by 2025.

James Schichtl, EPE’s Vice President of Regulatory Operations and Resource Strategy, said, “EPE is excited to partner with DESRI to bring this latest expansion of renewable energy generation to New Mexico and further expand our great collaboration.”

The solar plant is expected to generate enough clean energy to power approximately 37,600 homes annually, using standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to measure its impact.

Galehead Development and Lacuna Sustainable Investments were involved in the initial development phases of the project.

SOLV Energy has been appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project and will also provide maintenance and operations services after completion.

Hy Martin, DESRI’s Chief Development Officer, said, “DESRI is excited to continue our investment in New Mexico’s energy transition with our fourth utility-scale renewable energy facility in the state and to expand our long-standing relationship with EPE.

“Carne will provide EPE with reliable, cost-effective and clean electricity and will also support the transmission grid with the planned large battery storage facility. In addition, the project will provide economic development opportunities for the local community in the coming years.

“We are grateful for the support of EPE, Luna County, SOLV Energy and other project stakeholders.”
