The obscure Sega game “Eternal Champions” gets a big-budget movie

The production company behind it Top Shooter: Maverick is going back to the 1990s for its next attempt at launching a film franchise. According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, Skydance Derek Connolly to write the script for a live-action adaptation of the Sega video game Eternal ChampionsThere is no production timeline for the film yet, nor is there a studio attached, but with Paramount Global’s recent announcement that they have agreed to a merger with Skydance, they have become the most likely landing spot for the film. The 48-year-old Miami native has written for a number of major Hollywood productions and is best known as the author of all three films, Jurassic World Trilogy, which ended in 2022 Jurassic World: DominationTwo of these films were directed by his friend and frequent collaborator Colin Trevorrow, and despite the box office success of the trilogy, Connolly was nominated for a Golden Raspberry for Worst Screenplay for Rule.

Connolly also co-wrote the screenplay for the 2017 Monsterverse entry Kong: Skull Islandand wrote film history for 2019 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerwhich Trevorrow wanted to direct before dropping out due to creative differences. His big break came in 2013 with the writing of Safety not guaranteedand he recently signed a contract to Transformers and GI Joe Crossover film starring Chris Hemsworth.


Connolly has already been active in video game film franchises, after he had already written the script for 2019 Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. He was also commissioned to write the screenplay for Metal Gear Solidthe live-action adaptation of the action-stealth game, since 2017. The cinematic version of the Konami Playstation classic was delayed by the pandemic, but remains in development with Kong: Skull Island’s The film is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and stars Oscar Isaac as Snake. He is also writing the live-action version of the Nintendo classic The Legend of Zeldawhich Wes Ball will directthe recently Planet of the Apes: Kingdom.
