Suspect rammed a Lakeland police vehicle in a shopping center and crashed near a park: LPD

Investigators say a suspect is behind bars after he crashed into Lakeland police vehicles and officers during a chase on US-98 on Monday afternoon.

Investigators also said a Lakeland Police Department officer fired at the suspect, identified as 57-year-old John Alfred Hofman, as he drove into police vehicles.

It all started just before 12:45 p.m. when Lakeland police responded to a call that a man appeared to be incapacitated in a white Lincoln sedan. According to officers, the vehicle was stopped at a stop sign in the 1700 block of Lakehurst Street and the engine was still running.

Officers said they tried to speak with the suspect, but he woke up and drove away and crashed into a nearby vehicle. Police did not pursue him at the time, but he was spotted again at a gas station in the 3400 block of U.S. 98 North.

An LPD officer tried to stop him again, but the suspect drove away a second time, authorities said. This time, too, officers did not pursue the suspect.

Shortly after 1:15 p.m., the suspect’s vehicle was again located in the Village Plaza parking lot. As officers approached the suspect’s car, he jumped from the back seat to the front seat and repeatedly rammed two police vehicles while attempting to drive away.

Then, investigators say, one of the Lakeland police officers who responded to the suspect shot him multiple times. As he drove away, officers pursued him on U.S. 98 North to Wedgewood Estates Boulevard, where he crashed near Douglas M. Cook Park.

One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated and released by Lakeland Regional Health, according to investigators. Hofman was also taken to LRH for evaluation, but suffered no visible injuries and was taken to Polk County Jail.

Hofman has a criminal history with more than 30 charges and 10 felony convictions, police said. In addition to the charges stemming from his arrest Monday, he also had warrants out for his arrest in Sumter and Volusia counties.

According to police, the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office’s Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force will investigate the incident, which is standard practice in all police-involved shootings.
