Laika Studios returns to the big screen with their latest mysterious feature film. Wildwood. At a time when traditional animation styles are under threat from the continued rise of 3D animation, Laika is widely credited with not only preserving but also advancing claymation and stop-motion animation. Laika’s entirely unique style is evident in both its visuals and its surprising level of maturity, which pushes the boundaries of what can fit into a family-friendly animated film. Although all of their films have an accessible PG age rating, nearly all of Laika’s films are characterized by complex characters, scary visuals, and adult themes.

The video then switches to a dark and desolate forest populated by all sorts of scary looking creatures with haunting amber eyes. Big budget animated films from major animation studios like Laika typically feature a star-studded voice cast and Wildwood is no exception. Wildwood is based on the novel of the same name by the musician Colin Meloy and illustrated by the artist Carson Ellis (who, fun fact, are married in real life). As the trailer shows, Wildwood will probably be very similar to the dark fantasy novel it is based on. The official synopsis for the Wildwood Book reads as follows:

In Wildwood, Prue and her friend Curtis discover a secret world in the midst of violent unrest – a world full of warlike creatures, peaceful mystics and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.
