Tennessee introduces new high-security driver’s licenses and convenient self-service kiosks – Clarksville Online

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland SecurityNashville, Tennessee: The most beautiful beaches – Starting today, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) is issuing new driver’s licenses and identification cards with new designs and enhanced security features, as well as new self-service kiosks that can reduce wait times at Driver Service Centers.

The new login details and kiosks will be rolled out to all Driver Service Centers over the next few months.

The new driver’s licenses and ID cards prominently feature a stylized version of the historic State Capitol and Tennessee’s state flag with its iconic three stars representing the state’s three major divisions. The new design features waves and patterns printed in very fine lines that cannot be scanned or easily reproduced.

The new ID cards are made from a robust polycarbonate composition and feature the latest security and printing techniques, including intricate overlapping of data and graphics, and laser-engraved elements that show whether the document has been altered or counterfeited.

A machine-readable barcode with the corresponding classes, notations and restrictions is printed on the back of the card. A mini ghost image repeated from the photo is intended as an encoded element for automatic validation to prevent identity theft.

“The new Tennessee driver’s licenses feature the latest technology that makes them harder to counterfeit, alter or copy,” said TDOSHS Commissioner Jeff Long. “These countermeasures help prevent theft and fraud and protect your identity.”

Citizens do not need to obtain a new driver’s license or ID card with the new design before their current driver’s license or ID card expires. Driver’s licenses and ID cards with the old design will be used along with the new cards. Previously issued driver’s licenses will be valid until the expiration date shown on the card. Individuals do not need to replace their current driver’s license or ID card unless their current card has expired or there is a required change, such as a name or address change.

The new design applies to all IDs issued by the TDOSHS, including regular driver’s licenses, youth/graduated licenses, commercial driver’s licenses, motorcycle licenses, ID-only licenses, REAL IDs, and handgun carry permits.

“We are excited about the added flexibility and convenience that the new self-service kiosks will provide to the citizens of Tennessee,” said Commissioner Long. “Citizens will be able to complete many driver service transactions at one of these new kiosks, which will help reduce wait times at driver service centers.”

Tennessee residents can use the self-service kiosk to perform many driver service transactions, including renewing or replacing a duplicate driver’s license or identification card, changing an address, updating emergency contact information, renewing a youth/graduate driver’s license, paying reissuance fees, and applying for a driver’s license reissue after reissuance requirements have been met. The new kiosks can take photos and process payments using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a credit or debit card.
