Teenage daughter of Morgan Stanley manager and entrepreneur missing at sea after tornado

A celebration aboard a luxury superyacht off the coast of Italy continued to bring tragic news on Monday. Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer was reported missing from the sunken yacht, according to the telegraph.

Bloomer was aboard the 184-foot Bayes yacht with his close friend Mike Lynch, a tech mogul once dubbed the “Bill Gates of Britain” who recently escaped fraud charges in San Francisco related to the sale of his tech company Autonomy. Hewlett-Packard bought the software company for $11.7 billion in 2011, which was one of the largest tech deals in Europe at the time. HP later accused Lynch and others of accounting fraud, which Lynch denied. He was acquitted of all charges in June.

In a sad coincidence, Lynch’s co-defendant in the fraud case was hit by a car while jogging on Saturday morning. Stephen Chamberlain was a former vice president of finance at Autonomy and was charged with fraud and conspiracy along with Lynch. Chamberlain, who was also acquitted, died on Monday after reportedly being on life support for some time.

In addition to Lynch and Bloomer, Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is also missing. A total of 20 crew members and passengers were on the ship, and six more are missing, according to the Wall Street Journal. One died, Bloomberg reported. About 15 people who were on the yacht when the storm hit were reportedly rescued. One of them was a little girl whose mother, Charlotte Golunski, saved her daughter by holding her high above the waves while she treaded water.

A newspaper quoted Golunski as saying: “I held her above water with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to prevent her from drowning.” She continued: “So many were screaming. Fortunately, the lifeboat was inflated and eleven of us managed to get in.”

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and Lynch’s lawyer, Ayla Ronald, were reportedly among those rescued.

The WSJ reported that the yacht had sunk 50 metres into the water and that rescue teams were still on site on Monday.
