Skydiver stuck in tree rescued by rescue workers in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – Emergency crews in Orange County had to rescue a man who became trapped in a tree nearly 100 feet above the ground after a mid-air skydiving collision.

“It appears the two collided in mid-air, one landing on the side of Route 20 and the other in the top of a tree behind a farm on Mt. Sharon Road,” said the deputy chief of the Orange Volunteer Fire Department.

On Sunday, August 18, at around 4:40 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to rescue the diver trapped in the tree.

“He was in a tree that was probably at least 50 to 60 feet higher than our ladders could reach. So we had to get our aerial ladder back into the woods,” Roby said.

According to OVFC, it took about an hour to bring the diver to shore.

“We were able to lower him to the ground where rescue personnel, paramedics from the Orange County Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services Department, were able to take him over. Then we were able to get him out of the woods and load him into an ambulance. We took him to the Orange County Airport where he was flown by helicopter to a hospital,” Roby said.

While such incidents are frightening, they don’t happen often at Skydive Orange. Orange County’s emergency dispatch center says it has only received two 911 calls in the last six months.
