Pacific Rim conquers television with new prequel series

The world of Pacific Rim is making a giant leap with robotic legs onto the small screen. Variety reports that Legendary Entertainment and Shadows and Bonesby Eric Heisserer are collaborating on a new television series set in the world of the Kaiju vs. Mecha franchise.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Eric, Chronology and Carmen (Lewis, co-founder of production company Chronology) with a new entry in the epic, globally loved Pacific Rim universe,” Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television, said in a statement to Variety. “We are confident their vision will lead to an exciting expansion of Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

The Pacific Rim The series will be the first in the first-look TV deal between Chronology and Legendary, which, according to Variety, aims to develop and oversee “IP-based and related projects” for the studio.

Little has been revealed about the series so far, other than that it will serve as an “origin story” for the franchise. It is set in a near future in which much of the world has been devastated by the emergence of giant monsters called Kaiju – who pour into the world through an interdimensional rift in the Pacific Ocean –Pacific Rim follows the founding of the “Jaeger Program,” an international military power that develops giant robots controlled by multiple pilots whose brains are synchronized with each other. The first Pacific Rim The film was released in 2013 and was followed by a maligned sequel, Uprisingin 2018, but the franchise has flourished beyond the box office ever since, with the Netflix anime Pacific Rim: The Black and several comic series.

Whether the series will cover the early days of the appearance of the Kaiju species on Earth or the development of the Jaegers and their first battles against the monsters remains to be seen. But if Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters proved that you can achieve the scale and scope of Legendary’s other major monster series, Godzillawith a streaming series budget, then maybe there is hope for lots of fun monster and robot action here too.

We inform you about Legendary’s plans for Pacific Rim depending on when we find out about it.
