Man killed in accident with semi-trailer on Autobahn 5 identified

The man who died in a crash Saturday morning when his semi-trailer left the 5 Freeway and entered the streets of Newhall has been identified.

Roberto Flores, 24, was identified as the person who died Saturday morning when the tractor unit of a semi-trailer truck left the 5 Freeway in Newhall, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:25 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, as Flores was driving a white 2024 Volvo tractor northbound in lane 4 of the 5 Freeway toward Calgrove Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports.

“For unknown reasons,” Flores’ vehicle left the roadway and struck another tractor-trailer, a 2016 tractor-trailer, that was parked on the right shoulder, CHP reports said.

“After colliding with the parked 2016 Volvo, the 2024 Volvo struck the right bridge railing on Calgrove Boulevard, causing the cab of the 2024 Volvo to separate from the tractor frame and fall from the bridge below onto Calgrove Boulevard,” the CHP said in a statement.

Flores suffered numerous blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The driver of the second semi-trailer was outside his parked vehicle at the time of the accident and suffered moderate injuries as a result of the accident.

Anyone with information regarding this accident is asked to contact Officer Luna at the Newhall CHP Area Office at (661) 600-1600.
