A garden wedding with a double ceremony arch

Cody and Mark first met in April 2017 on a hiking wellness retreat in Malibu, California. Four years later, in the summer of 2021, the couple took a boat ride in Montecito, California, and Mark seized the opportunity to propose (of course, Cody said yes!). After their engagement, the couple celebrated with dinner at San Ysidro Ranch. When Cody saw the ranch’s stone patio and carriage house, she knew immediately it was the perfect place for their ceremony. “We met and got engaged in California, so it just felt right to get married there,” says Cody.

The couple invited 66 guests to their October 9, 2022, wedding at the ranch. Cody and Mark envisioned an event filled with vibrant garden roses and dahlias with decor in a warm color palette reminiscent of the Southern California coast. The couple lives in New York City and hired Augusta Cole and her team to plan and design the big day. “Planning a wedding across the country is not easy, and she took all of my worries and put my mind at ease,” says the bride.

The couple began the day with a first look before signing the ketubah with their rabbi and exchanging vows in front of their closest loved ones. You won’t want to miss any of the details of this intimate, flower-filled day. Read on to see Lacie Hansen’s photos.

Cody and Mark invited their 66 guests to kick off the festivities with a rehearsal dinner and then head to their wedding together the next day. They worked with Amber Moon Design to design their invitations in neutral tones and a rich terra cotta hue to set the stage for the wedding day’s color palette. “We loved the warm tones for the Southern California coast,” says Cody.

The duo welcomed guests with a woven bag filled with their favorite items. “We love hiking and hoped our guests would get out and enjoy the views of Montecito, so we gave everyone water bottles, baseball caps with SYR on the front, and cookies from Susie Cakes, which are our absolute favorite cookies, as well as some other local treats,” says Cody.

When Cody was shopping for her wedding dress at Bergdorf Goodman, she spotted a structured cap-sleeve gown with floral appliqués by Reem Acra – and knew it was the one. “The moment I saw it, it seemed like the most unique thing I had ever seen,” she says. “It was the opposite of everything I thought I would wear.”

She accessorized with pearl earrings that her sister gave her the night before the wedding, Manolo Blahnik slingback pumps, and a cathedral-length veil. She wanted her beauty look on her big day to feel natural, soft, and romantic. “I knew I wanted a loose bun, given the garden ranch setting,” she says. Her bridal bouquet consisted of garden roses, ranunculus, and mini dahlias.

Cody and Mark opted for a first look so they could spend their cocktail hour with their guests. “It was truly magical,” says the bride. “We were up in a garden overlooking the property, all dressed up, and it just blew us away. We both had tears in our eyes. It was surreal.” Before the ceremony, Cody and Mark gathered with their rabbi and close family members to sign their ketubah.

The couple’s ceremony took place at the base of the ranch’s rose garden. “The roses were in full bloom the wedding weekend,” says Cody. “It was incredible.” Cody and Mark wanted to make a floral statement, so they worked with florist Kathleen Deery Design to create a delicate flower-lined aisle and cover the venue’s existing green arches with pink, white and yellow flowers.

Cody walked down the aisle with her father as Dave Matthews played “You and Me” live on strings. The couple exchanged vows under two fragrant ceremonial arches before walking down the aisle to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.”

After finally being pronounced husband and wife, Cody and Mark went out into the garden with their photographer to take portraits before rejoining their guests for the cocktail reception.

During this break, guests enjoyed the views of the California hills and sipped drinks. The couple’s planning team decorated an outdoor bar with lush arrangements of hydrangeas, roses and dahlias and set up booths and lounge furniture to encourage guests to chat amongst themselves. Cody and Mark made sure to serve 1942 tequila and some of their favorite canapés.

The escort display was a geometric shelf that held arrangements of pink dahlias and roses in terracotta pots. Each arrangement had a label with the guests’ names and table numbers for dinner written in calligraphy by Amber Moon Design.

The reception was held on the stone house patio of the San Ysidro Ranch, a 19th-century citrus packing house that opens to a deck where guests could enjoy views over the treetops to the Pacific Ocean. Long tables were covered in ivory tweed with a subtle hint of terra cotta color. Place settings included china dishes, white linen napkins, and custom-stamped menus. “Our water glass was a decorative focal point with gold filigree, and we were all about candlelight from taper candles during dinner,” says Cody. Dazzling floral arrangements in pink, orange, and cream ran the length of each table.

Cody and Mark’s guests enjoyed their favorite tortilla soup from the ranch’s restaurant to start their meal. They then had a small salad, followed by parmesan-crusted halibut, roasted organic chicken or pan-seared beef tenderloin. “It was important to us to give our guests a choice so they could really enjoy this special restaurant,” says the bride.

The couple hired a DJ with a horn section to get the dance party started. “Music is very important to both of us, but especially to Mark, so we worked closely with DJ Cam to get the mood just right,” says Cody. The newlyweds danced their first dance as husband and wife to “Sparks” by Coldplay.

The couple had a classic four-tier wedding cake decorated with greenery and roses – and opted for a funfetti variety. “It’s very much our style,” says Cody. The cake made a statement when it was presented on a round table with a pink floral tablecloth.

As the party continued, the couple provided guests with late-night snacks, including cheeseburger sliders. Cody donned a one-shoulder Carolina Herrera minidress with a large bow on the back for dancing. “I looked it up online and found it in Europe,” she says. “The moment I saw it, I called Carolina Herrera and had them get it for me to try on!”

Cody and Mark spent their honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For couples planning their big day themselves, Cody advises hiring a wedding planner who really understands them. “My wedding planner was incredibly patient and was always three steps ahead of us,” she says.
