Borderlands movie continues its box office disaster with another very bad weekend

The Borderlands movie had a very poor first weekend in theaters and the second weekend also had low ratings. Of course, most movies experience dips in the weeks after release, so this was always to be expected with Borderlands. It looks like another major flop in 2024, like Madame Web.

Borderlands grossed $2.4 million in North America last weekend, coming in at number 9. Only Hindi horror comedy Stree 2 ($2.2 million) fared better in the top 10 list. Borderlands has grossed a total of $13.5 million in North America and another $5 million in international markets, for a worldwide total of $18.5 million.

The Borderlands movie reportedly had a production budget of $115 million and advertising and distribution costs of about $30 million. While Borderlands sounds like it could end up being a loss-maker, we don’t know for sure. After all, about 60% of the Borderlands movie’s production costs were recouped after the first weekend through pre-sales to international theater exhibitors.

Added to that is revenue from the home video release of Borderlands, which is reportedly set for August 30. Lionsgate could also make money from the film by selling it to airlines and other distribution partners.

Lionsgate financed the film, and no matter how it ends up doing at the box office, developer Gearbox may not suffer a financial loss. “The money around the film is the film studio’s risk, so I’m not really affected by it, other than that if the studio loses money, they may not want to make another film (which would be a shame),” Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said on social media.

Given the critical and commercial response to the film, the chances of there being a Borderlands movie sequel are extremely slim.

Borderlands underperformed despite being an established, popular IP with a loyal fanbase and a cast featuring high-profile and acclaimed actors such as Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, and Edgar Ramirez.

Strauss Zelnick, head of Gearbox owner Take-Two and a former film producer himself, advised viewers to give the film a chance despite the poor reviews. For more, check out GameSpot’s Borderlands film review.
