Barely 3 weeks after its $90 million flop, the Borderlands film is set to disappear from theaters and go straight to streaming
According to reports, the Borderlands film will be available on streaming services just three weeks after its theatrical debut, following a truly disappointing box office performance.
When the Borderlands movie hit theaters earlier this month, initial reactions weren’t exactly kind, with people calling it a “disaster” and “uninspired.” This prompted the CEO of Gearbox, the studio that develops the Borderlands game series, to go on a minor Twitter rampage, attacking critics of the new film.
Now, it looks like the Borderlands movie will debut on streaming services very soon on August 30, barely three weeks after it first hit theaters, according to sites like The Hollywood Handle and When to Stream, two tracking sites with an accurate track record of reporting streaming dates.
However, both tracking sites point out that Lionsgate, the distributor of the Borderlands movie, has not yet confirmed the streaming date itself and it is subject to change. So don’t take the streaming date for the Borderlands movie at face value until it is confirmed by the studio.
At the time of this writing, the Borderlands movie has only grossed $21.2 million worldwide. That’s against a production budget of $110-120 million, so Lionsgate doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to recouping the film’s development costs.
