Roadwork Summary: Work begins on the lower part of Route 8

Several major road construction projects will begin or move into a new phase starting Monday. Here are the highlights:

  • Route 8 — A year-long project to improve the lower portion of Route 8 in Shaler, Etna and Pittsburgh begins Monday with work on the city side of Route 62and Street Bridge. The first work will be done on Butler Street between Baker Street and the bridge, where workers will mill and repave the roadway, repair a retaining wall and install a barrier for a future shared-use path. The plan is to maintain one lane of traffic throughout the work, but workers will work weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Additional work will be done on weekends through the end of the year. There will be additional work north of 62.and Street Bridge to Saxonburg Boulevard, but no timeline has been established for that. That work includes restoring the concrete pavement, upgrading two structures over Pine Creek, and improving signals, signs and guardrails. Over the next year, work will require three separate one-way detours on the bridge, a weekend detour at the Saxonburg Boulevard intersection, and a detour for rebuilding the ramp from southbound Route 28 to northbound Route 8. The $9.1 million project is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
  • Clairton — North State Street (Route 837) will be limited to one lane in each direction between Coal Valley Road and Lincoln Way this week. Crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pave Miller Road as part of the construction of the Mon-Fayette Expressway on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The toll road will extend from Route 51 in Jefferson Hills to Route 837 in Duquesne.
  • Interstate 79 — The ramp from Grand Avenue to Interstate 79 South will be closed Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. through Sept. 21. The closure will allow workers to mill the ramp and apply a latex deck overlay. The designated detour will direct traffic from Grand to I-79 North to the Route 65 exit. Bear left toward Glenfield, turn left onto Deer Run Road, then left onto the ramp to I-79 South. The work is part of a $43.9 million highway upgrade project in Glenfield, Neville, Robinson and Kennedy.
  • Monroeville — Work to repair a landslide on Route 22 between Old William Penn Highway and Haymaker Road will begin at 9 a.m. Monday. Motorists should use caution while crews from A. Liberoni Inc. work to repair the landslide weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work should be completed by the end of the month.
