From January to June, the total retail sales of consumer goods amounted to 23,596.9 billion yuan, up 3.7 percent year-on-year. Of these, retail sales of consumer goods (excluding cars) amounted to 21,300.7 billion yuan, up 4.1 percent. In June, the total retail sales of consumer goods amounted to 4,073.2 billion yuan, up 2.0 percent year-on-year. Of these, retail sales of consumer goods (excluding cars) amounted to 3,636.4 billion yuan, up 3.0 percent.
By business unit location, retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas from January to June reached 20,455.9 billion yuan, up 3.6 percent year-on-year; retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas reached 3,141.0 billion yuan, up 4.5 percent. Among them, retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas reached 3,514.1 billion yuan in June, up 1.7 percent; retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas reached 559.1 billion yuan in June, up 3.8 percent.
According to consumption patterns, retail sales from January to June were 20,972.6 billion yuan, up 3.2 percent year-on-year; catering industry revenue was 2,624.3 billion yuan, up 7.9 percent; retail sales in June were 3,612.3 billion yuan, up 1.5 percent; catering industry revenue was 460.9 billion yuan in June, up 5.4 percent.
By retail format, from January to June, retail sales of convenience stores, specialty stores and supermarkets in retail enterprises above a certain size increased by 5.8, 4.5 and 2.2 percent respectively compared to the previous year; retail sales of department stores and branded stores decreased by 3.0 and 1.8 percent respectively.
From January to June, online retail sales nationwide reached 7,099.1 billion yuan, up 9.8 percent year-on-year. Of these, online retail sales of physical goods reached 5,959.6 billion yuan, up 8.8 percent, accounting for 25.3 percent of total retail sales of consumer goods. Among online retail sales of physical goods, sales of food, clothing and consumer goods increased by 17.8, 7.0 and 7.8 percent respectively.

Total retail sales of consumer goods: refers to the amount of physical goods sold by enterprises (units and individual households) to individuals and social groups for non-productive and non-business purposes through transactions, as well as the amount of revenue from the provision of catering services.
Online retail sales: refers to the sale of goods and services through public online trading platforms (including self-built websites and third-party platforms). Goods and services include physical and non-physical goods (such as virtual products and services). Goods and services include physical and non-physical goods (such as virtual products and services).
Total retail sales of consumer goods include online retail sales of physical goods and excludes online retail sales of non-physical goods.
2. Statistical recording
Enterprises with legal personality, units engaged in industrial activity and self-employed households engaged in the retail sale of goods or providing catering services. Among these units above the specified size are wholesale enterprises (units and individuals) with an annual main business income of 20 million yuan or more, retail enterprises (units and individuals) with an annual main business income of 5 million yuan or more, and enterprises (units and individuals) engaged in the hotel and catering business with an annual main business income of 2 million yuan or more.
3. Survey methods
All companies above the specified size are surveyed, while data from companies below the specified size are collected through sample surveys.
4. Scope of statistics
Since the scope of wholesale and retail enterprises, hotels and catering establishments (units and individual households) above the specified size changes every year, in order to ensure comparability of the current year’s data with those of the previous year, the data of the same period used to calculate the annual growth rate of various indicators such as retail sales of consumer goods of units above the specified size must be consistent with the statistical scope of enterprises (units and individual households) in the current period, and different data access standards apply to the data published in the current year and the previous year. This is mainly because some enterprises (units and individual households) are included in the survey each year after reaching the required size, while others (units and individual households) that do not meet the quota standards due to their smaller size are removed from the survey. In addition, there is an impact of newly established, insolvent and deregistered enterprises (units and individual households).
Since the scope of online platforms included in online retail statistics changes every year, the data of the same period used to calculate the annual growth rate of online retail is consistent with the scope of platforms included in the statistics of the current period to ensure that the data of the current year are comparable with those of the previous year. In addition, different data access standards apply to the data released in the current year and the data of the previous year. This is mainly because new platforms are included in the survey scope every year, and platforms that do not meet the requirements of the statistical system are removed from the survey scope.
5. Revision of figures compared to the previous month
According to the automatic revision function of the seasonal adjustment model, the monthly growth rate of total retail sales of consumer goods has been revised since June 2023. The revised results and monthly data for June 2024 are as follows:
