The charts include comparisons between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 was launched in Japan in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 was released in February 2014. This means that the holidays of the two consoles do not coincide.

PS5 vs PS4 Japan:

Gap change in the last month: 17,347 – PS5

Gap change in the last 12 months: 295,538 – PS4

Total lead: 284,707 – PS5

PlayStation 5 total sales: 5,907,063

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 5,622,356

July 2024 is the 45th month that the PlayStation 5 has been available. Last month, the gap in favor of the PlayStation 5 grew by 17,347 units compared to the simultaneous launch of the PlayStation 4.

In the last 12 months, 295,538 more PS4 units were sold than PS5. The PS5 is currently in the lead with 284,707 units.

The 45th month for the PS5 in Japan is July 2024, while for the PS4 it is October 2017. The PS5 has sold 5.91 million units, while the PS4 sold 5.62 million units in the same period. The PS4 outsold the current PS5 sales in the 47th month.

The PS4 crossed the 6 million mark in month 47, the 7 million mark in month 53, and the 8 million mark in month 61. To date, the PS4 has sold 9.68 million units. The PS5 is currently 3.77 million units behind the PS4’s total sales in Japan.
