Volunteers restore items damaged by flooding

HINDMAN, Kentucky (WYMT) – Thousands of items were destroyed at the Hindman Settlement School in the July 2022 flood.

Since then, several people, including flood rescue archivist Sarah Insalaco, have worked to restore thousands of documents, photographs and more.

She said cleaning these items can be a lengthy process.

“We sort them out one by one in the order they were in the folder, like we did on this table. If it’s really dirty and filthy, it needs to be saturated or cleaned,” Insalaco said.

A group of volunteers spent the weekend helping to restore some of these items.

“We were so successful that we were able to complete about 10 folders and pack them in boxes and they are now ready to be processed,” she said.

Insalaco added that their goal is to make the documents more accessible to the public.

“Not just researchers, but anyone who wants to have access to the materials can come and look at them. And now that digitization is hopefully happening soon, we will be able to access them and use them worldwide,” she explained.

She said you can contact her to volunteer and check out her website for more information.
