FedEx St. Jude Championship: Japanese Hideki Matsuyama wins in Tennessee

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama gave up a five-stroke lead overnight before recovering to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Tennessee.

The Paris Olympic bronze medallist maintained a comfortable lead over the first nine holes before his challenge appeared to slip away when he lost four strokes over a four-hole stretch, including a disappointing tee shot into the water on the 14th.

Matsuyama’s stumble allowed Viktor Hovland to take the lead before he regained his composure with a 26-foot putt on the 17th hole to move back into the lead by one stroke with one hole to go.

An excellent second shot on the par-4 18th hole landed on the green before a putt for birdie secured the title by two points in the first round of the PGA Tour season-ending play-offs.

Matsuyama, 32, played at the TPC Southwind without his usual caddie after his team was robbed during a stopover in London following the Olympics.

Norwegian defending champion Hovland finished in second place with 15 under par, tied with American world number two Xander Schauffele.

American world number one Scottie Scheffler finished fourth at 14 under par in an event featuring the top 70 in the FedEx Cup points standings, while the top 50 advance to the next round of the BMW Championship in Colorado.

The top 50 not only come to Colorado, but also qualify for each of the eight major PGA Tour events in 2025.
