Gabriel Jesus’ signature phone greeting is a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Vera Lucia Diniz de Jesus.

The celebration began in 2016 during a World Cup qualifier for Brazil, where Jesus celebrated a goal by mimicking a phone call.

The gesture, which Jesus explained in more detail in interviews, reflects his close bond with his mother and his gratitude for her unwavering support throughout his career.

In an interview he said: “It was a joke with my friends, a ‘Hello, Mom.’

“My friends know why. My mother knows too.

“It was a celebration for them.”

During his time at Manchester City, Jesus also revealed: “When we were kids, my mum would call me all the time to see where I was and if I didn’t answer, she would call all my friends.

“When I pick up the phone, it is in honor of my mother and our fight.

“But it is also an honor for my friends and family and coach Mamede and everyone in Brazil who helped me get here.

“Every time I score a goal for Manchester City, my mother calls me.

“As soon as the ball lands in the net, the phone rings.

“It doesn’t matter if she’s at home in Brazil or if she’s in the stadium watching me.

“She calls me every time. So I run to the corner flag, put my hand to my ear and say, ‘Alo Mae!’ (Hello mom).”

He is not the only Arsenal star who celebrates goals in a unique way.

For example, Kai Havertz closes his ears when celebrating after a goal.
