What is sport climbing?

There are actually three different types of sport climbing at the Olympics, and over the next three days we’ll see them all in action. The first is speed climbing, which is pretty self-explanatory and requires the climber to complete a course as quickly as possible.

At the Olympic Games, the last two disciplines of sport climbing are combined into a single competition, where climbers complete both disciplines and their total score then determines the medal winners. These disciplines are lead climbing and bouldering.

In lead climbing, athletes climb as high as possible on a wall over 15 meters high in six minutes without having seen the route beforehand, using anchors on the wall to avoid falls. In bouldering, athletes climb 4.5 meter high walls without a rope in as few attempts as possible and within a set time.
