LEGO Legend of Zelda 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 review

Open your eyes… wake up. The long wait is over and the LEGO Group and Nintendo have finally released the first set based on The Legend of Zelda. But is it everything we’ve always wanted?

Expectations for 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 are at an all-time high. Over the years, countless Zelda builds have been submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform, many of which reached the coveted 10,000 backer milestone, but none have made it into production. Fans had almost given up hope that an official The Legend of Zelda set would ever be released. But now that it’s here, the question remains: will 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 earn a rightful place in the Sacred Realm, or should it be sealed in the Dark World for all eternity?

‘Hey, listen!’

Aside from its iconic mustachioed mascot Mario, no other game franchise has been as successful for Nintendo as The Legend of Zelda. First released on the Japanese Famicom in 1986 (and released in North America and Europe a year later), the original game pushed the boundaries of what was possible on an 8-bit system and gave players a groundbreaking experience. Since then, the series has spawned 21 titles (excluding remakes), all of which continue to push the boundaries of video game innovation. The two games that inspire this set, Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild, are widely hailed as the best video games of all time.

Nintendo is known for protecting its intellectual property rights, but with LEGO, The Legend of Zelda is in safe hands. From the outset, it’s clear that the designers have a deep love and passion for the series, treating the property with the utmost care and attention to detail.

Eager builders will first tackle two smaller outbuildings that accompany the 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1: Link’s House, located deep in the Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time, and the Master Sword Base from Breath of the Wild, which includes a LEGO version of the Sword That Seals Darkness. Although modest in size, both builds are packed with nods to the series. A small crate at the back of Link’s House contains a few franchise staples, while the Master Sword base faithfully recreates the forest floor of the Lost Woods that surrounds the Great Deku Tree. Endura Mushrooms, Hylian Mushrooms, a hearty radish, and even a Silent Princess flower have been carefully crafted in brick form – the Silent Princess stands out with her accuracy and intelligent design.

With most sets of this size, the main build usually takes center stage early on, dominating the initial stages of construction. However, 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 keeps things fresh and exciting right from the start. Builders start with Link’s House, then build the base of Breath of the Wild’s Great Deku Tree, before moving on to assembling a brick-built Hestu – a fan-favorite character from the newer games – and then returning to work on the base. This dynamic approach keeps the build exciting and interesting at each stage, offering a refreshing change of pace.

Each of these smaller bases also doubles as a fantastic display piece. For those with limited shelf space, they’re perfect – compact enough to fit almost anywhere, yet packed with instantly recognizable details from the series.

“It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this!”

After the Zeldarific (yes, that’s a word) dopamine rush of the first few bags, the pace slows down a bit as the focus shifts to building the Great Deku Tree itself. The first five bags together form the foundation of the tree, and once they’re complete, you’ll have a choice of which version you want to build. Although the guide recommends starting with the Breath of the Wild version, this is the more complicated and involved of the two, so it might be worth tackling the Ocarina of Time model first.

Both models are expertly crafted and, despite their different features, perfectly capture the essence of their respective source material through clever design and excellent part selection. When you get eye-to-eye with either model, you’ll instantly feel like you’ve been transported to Hyrule – and having the Lost Woods theme playing in the background completes the experience.

Of the two models, the Breath of the Wild version is probably the more stunning. The pink cherry blossom petals at the top are visually striking and the smaller brown trees scattered across the forest floor give an impressive sense of scale. These smaller trees are also cleverly designed and add to the overall grandeur of the structure. The interior details are incredibly accurate to the game and fans who have spent hours exploring Hyrule in Breath of the Wild will feel right at home here, especially as they are surrounded by adorable brick-built Koroks – possibly the cutest LEGO companions since Harry Potter’s Niffler.

Would the Koroks have looked better as finished molds rather than built from bricks? Perhaps, but their design has a charm all its own. Their printed faces perfectly capture the quirky nature of these little forest dwellers. Overall, the decision to build the Koroks from bricks was a great one – not only because of their adorable appearance, but also because it helped keep the already high price in check.

While Breath of the Wild’s model looks vibrant and full of life, Ocarina of Time’s model exudes an ancient, timeless quality that’s perfectly suited to its source material. It’s an almost magical experience to see the venerable, timeless Great Deku Tree emerge from the same pile of bricks used for the more modern version.

Each version of the 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 has several clever play features built into it. The Ocarina of Time model features a mouth that opens and closes, as well as a golden Skulltula that drops down when you turn a gear. The Breath of the Wild version has a hidden lever on the back that can be used to control the Great Deku Tree’s mouth and eyebrows, bringing the model to life.

A standout feature of this set is how distinctly different the two models are. In many 2-in-1 sets, the models look similar with few noticeable differences. In this set, however, each model is completely unique, which is a remarkable feat. It’s just a shame you can’t build both at the same time.

“It’s a secret for everyone…”

The Legend of Zelda games are known for their mysteries, and true to that motto, the 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is chock full of Easter eggs waiting to be discovered. From the obvious, like Link’s iconic Hylian Shield and Master Sword (with a pearlescent blade that shimmers in the light), to the lesser-known, like the Gossip Stone hidden behind the Great Deku Tree from Ocarina of Time, the set is full of delightful surprises. Listing them all would spoil the fun, but fans will enjoy discovering each hidden detail for themselves.

The minifigures have been designed with the same care and feature stunning printing, particularly on the Champion tunics worn by Link and Zelda from Breath of the Wild. Each minifigure’s hair, hat and ears are made as separate molds and all feature a double-sided facial print. The accessories are superbly designed and feature intricate detailing on the shields and Zelda’s Sheikah Slate. There’s even a LEGO Ocarina of Time for adult Link.

Incredibly, all of these Easter eggs, accessories and weapons are printed pieces. There is not a single sticker to apply throughout the entire set. This adds to the exclusivity of the set and underlines its status as a premium product. Overall, there are just so many positive aspects to 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1.

Of course, it has a very high price tag, but compared to similar products already available, the price does not seem too high and you effectively get two very different models. Moreover, the sheer joy that this set will undoubtedly bring to Zelda fans is more than worth the price. Here, the LEGO Group delivers a popular intellectual property at its very best and it truly deserves Nintendo’s famous seal of approval.
