Sega’s next live-action film? A fighting game that hasn’t seen a new installment in nearly 30 years

Sega has another live-action movie in the works, but it’s not Persona or anything you’ve probably heard of.

With superhero movies having declined somewhat in recent years, Hollywood has found a new source to dry up: video games. In recent years, we’ve seen more and more adaptations, like The Last of Us, Fallout, and most recently the incredibly awful Borderlands movie. One of the big movies that helped revive video game adaptations was, of course, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, a pretty good movie that made a lot of money. With its success came a sequel and a Knuckles spin-off show, and another movie is due out in December, so Sega is obviously very happy with its live-action output. On top of that, Sega is also releasing a Yakuza TV series next October. And as The Hollywood Reporter reports, its next live-action outing will be… er, Eternal Champions?

I’m guessing if you’re under 35 like me, you’re probably not that familiar with this title, and I wouldn’t blame you. Originally released on the Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis for anyone in the US) in 1993, Eternal Champions was a fighting game developed by Sega to capitalize on the popularity of Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat. The titular Eternal Champion brings various key figures from history back to their time, each of whom was about to die shortly before they were kidnapped. They are offered the opportunity to enter a tournament that will keep them alive.

Definitely sounds like the plot of a fighting game and is quite obviously a nod to Street Fighter and especially Mortal Kombat, but hey, the 90s were a wild time. There was a sequel and a couple of spin-offs, but nothing has happened in nearly 30 years, so it’s a weird idea to draw from that.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this film adaptation will be produced by Skydance and will be written by Derek Connolly, whose credits include Jurassic World, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the upcoming live-action Zelda film. So it’s a pretty mixed bag, but one that clearly leans towards a video game adaptation.

Not much has been revealed about the film yet, so you’ll just have to wait and see what comes of it. If Sega is willing to step away from titles like this, maybe you’ll still get your live-action Persona show or movie. Maybe.
