I am a nutritionist and this vegan food delivery service is the real deal

What is Sprinly?

Sprinly is a plant-based meal delivery service founded by a husband and wife team passionate about healthy living. Each meal is made with vegan ingredients and prepared in a gluten-free kitchen (though they don’t have gluten-free certification yet). They also prioritize organic wherever possible and list 100% organic ingredients on the label of many meals.

The meals come fully prepared and can be reheated and consumed either in the microwave or following the simple stovetop or oven instructions. All of Sprinly’s meals are not only vegan and gluten-free, but also free from artificial preservatives and refined sugar.

How does it work?

To get started with Sprinly, go to their website and select the number of meals you want per week. You can choose between 6, 12, or 18 meals. Once you’ve made your selection, all you have to do is enter your email address, shipping and billing information, then select your meals.

You can View menu for the next four weeks, with six meals to choose from each week. You can choose one meal of each type, or six meals of one type, and any combination in between. Each meal includes the nutritional values, allergens, and other important information, so you know exactly what each meal contains before you select it for delivery.

Once you sign up, you’ll receive one order each week. You can easily skip between one and four deliveries, or pause or cancel them in your account settings. Meals must be selected by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. EST for delivery the following week. If you miss the appointment, you’ll receive a choice of one, two, or three meals of each menu option, depending on the number of meals you’ve signed up for delivery each week.

Sprinly delivers to all 48 contiguous states, and the ready-to-eat meals are delivered on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, depending on your location. The shipping boxes are well-insulated, so it’s OK if you’re not home when the delivery is made—but you should be able to refrigerate the meals before the end of the day.

For my test run, Sprinly sent me the following meals:

  • Rice and lentil risotto with roasted portabella mushrooms

  • Brunch frittata with walnut and strawberry vinaigrette salad

  • Chipotle Sweet Potato Hash with Plant-Based Chorizo and Chipotle Aioli

  • Smoky beetroot burger without bun with coriander-lime dressing

  • General Tsao’s tofu with broccoli and red pepper

  • Burmese Lemongrass Noodles with Jade Pearl Ramen

What was my first impression?

When I unpacked the meals, I was immediately impressed by the clean, aesthetic packaging and the variety of meals I received. Meals like Burmese Lemongrass Noodles with Jade Pearl Ramen, a dish I would most likely never make for myself, had my mouth watering before I even finished reading the label. I was incredibly excited to try these.

Often with ready-made meals, you’re instructed to poke a few holes in the container and microwave the whole tray, but Sprinly’s instructions were different, although they were almost as simple. I’m not usually a big fan of reheating food in the microwave, so the instructions for cooking on the stove were also very welcome.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Sprinly?

Meal selection

Sprinly changes their menu every week so no two weeks are the same, although they say fan favorites occasionally reappear within a few months. You get a variety of meals each week, from big salads, pasta-based dishes and meat substitutes to tofu and veggie bowls, so you’ll have a good selection to choose from.

I was surprised that only six meals are offered per week. The minimum order of six meals means you have to order two or even three servings of a meal if there are options on the menu that don’t fit your dietary needs or taste preferences. One of the benefits of a meal delivery service is that I don’t have to repeat meals every week like I would if I were preparing meals at home, so this feature wasn’t my favorite.

Preparation

I have nothing but positive things to say about the simplicity and ease of preparing my meals with Sprinly. Most meals had some components that were not meant to be heated (like fresh salad or sauces) and it was easy to remove those components and heat the rest.

For most dishes, there were microwave instructions and alternate instructions for heating the dish on the stovetop using just one pan and only taking 3-5 minutes. The instructions are also specific to the dish so none of this is complicated or time consuming, but heating things separately, covering, uncovering or heating parts and then adding other elements before heating further will give you a higher quality texture than just microwaving everything together.

I cooked some dishes (frittatas) in the microwave and they were perfectly warm and tender in just a few minutes. Other dishes I heated on the stove, which took less than five minutes and gave them a “freshly cooked” taste and texture.

Nutrition

The abundance and variety of fresh vegetables and plant proteins in each meal were truly impressive. The high plant content in each meal makes it easy to meet your daily fiber needs, as each meal I got contained over 5g of fiber, or up to 18 grams per serving. These meals are the perfect solution if you’re struggling to eat enough fruits and vegetables or fiber.

Most plant-based convenience foods had a decent amount of protein, but some had quite low protein levels for a complete meal, which could make it difficult to meet your daily protein needs.

Sprinly adds tons of flavor to its dishes without loading them with sodium, a challenge many meal delivery services face. Most of its dishes contain less than 500 milligrams of sodium, and each package instructs you to add salt and pepper as needed, as it intentionally keeps sodium levels low.

Taste good

I really enjoyed every meal. Everything tasted fresh and the texture was just right. The vegetables were tender, the grains were soft without being mushy, and the sauces included in most dishes added a fabulous burst of flavor.

Prices

The price per meal is higher than many meal delivery services, even those that offer ready-made meals like this service. Considering the quality of the meals and that they are 100% vegan, gluten-free and made from mostly organic ingredients, I think the higher price is quite reasonable.

Most of the dishes were what I would order at a restaurant, not what I normally eat at home, as many options included ingredients I don’t normally cook with. This makes the $18 per meal a bargain compared to what I would spend eating out.

However, at $16 to $18 per meal, it may not fit into every home grocery budget.

Delivery

My food box arrived on time on the expected day – a Tuesday – and was delivered right to my doorstep. Everything was well packaged, insulated and cold when it arrived.

Who should order Sprinly?

As a single parent and omnivore who focuses on a plant-based diet, I can imagine anyone who is already vegan or looking to incorporate more plant-based meals into their diet would benefit from Sprinly.

If you eat most of your meals with others in your household, the price per serving may not make sense, but if you eat several meals a week alone and often resort to expensive takeout to save time and energy, you’ll likely get the most benefit. Analyze your current grocery spending and these meals can save you a lot of money, even if they seem expensive at first.

Although each meal is 100% vegan, you don’t have to be vegan to truly enjoy them. Anyone who wants to experiment with plant-based eating or has the goal of eating healthier, eating more vegetables, or getting more fiber would benefit from the nutrients and healthiness of Sprinly meals.

Is Sprinly healthy?

As a registered dietitian, I love the nutrients, ingredients, and abundance of fresh ingredients in Sprinly’s meals. They’re low in sodium, low in saturated fat, and offer an abundance of fresh produce and nutrients that many Americans lack, like fiber. And while not all meals are free of added sugar (some contain sugar from ingredients like maple syrup or honey), they are free of refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup, some of the main sources of added sugar in many diets.

Conclusion

Sprinly is a vegan and gluten-free meal delivery service that offers a limited weekly selection of prepared meals that just need to be heated up and eaten. The mostly organic meals are packed with fresh ingredients, plant-based protein, plenty of fiber, and lots of flavor without excessive salt. If you’re vegan or want to eat more plant-based meals, eat less sodium, get more fiber in your diet, and save time cooking, you could benefit from Sprinly—if your grocery budget allows. While the meals cost more per serving than the food I’d cook at home, they would help me eat healthier and save money instead of ordering takeout or eating out at the last minute.
