Groom kicks best man out of wedding because he proposed to his girlfriend during his speech • PhilSTAR Life

A groom threw his best man out of his wedding because he had stolen the show from him and his partner by proposing marriage during his speech.

Details of the incident on the Am I the Asshole (AITA) On the Reddit forum, the 30-year-old groom said that John, his best friend, ruined one of the most unforgettable days of his life.

“It was perfect – almost,” he said. “The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was even better. Everything went smoothly until the speeches. John stood up to give his speech as best man.”

“At first it was full of the usual jokes and emotional stories that everyone liked,” he continued.

“But then, out of the blue, he turned to his girlfriend and started talking about their relationship. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee and proposing to her in the middle of my reception!”

The incident left him and his wife “angry” and he felt that his friend had stolen the show from him and the love of his life.

“I felt like my special day had been hijacked. Instead of celebrating our wedding, everyone was now focusing on John and his fiancée.”

After proposing, the groom confronted John and told him that he had “gone too far.”

“He said he thought it would be a great surprise and assumed I would be happy for him. I told him he was selfish and inconsiderate and I ended up kicking him out of the reception,” the groom said.

Some of their mutual friends said he had “overreacted” and that he should have “let it go for the sake of our friendship.”

His wife fully supported his decision, but later he wondered if he had been too strict with his best man.

“My wife fully supports my decision, but I’m starting to wonder if I was too harsh. AITA for firing my best man and kicking him out of my wedding because he proposed to me during the reception?” he concluded.

While Reddit users told him that what he did to his best man was fair, there were some who noted that it was not John’s intention to hurt him in any way.

“You have every right to be angry but now it is your duty to forgive. You must not sweep things under the rug as if nothing happened but choose to forgive John and put aside what he did for the years you were friends,” said one social media user. “I hope he apologizes to you and your new wife for his bad taste. But try to forgive him even if he doesn’t.”
