Officer jumps into Neuse River near Raleigh Beach to rescue person in distress, 2 others rescued

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WTVD) – Three people were rescued from the Neuse River on Saturday afternoon.

According to the city of Knightdale, emergency crews responded to 911 calls about three people stranded in the Neuse River near Raleigh Beach. While preparing for the rescue, officials said a Raleigh police officer entered the water and rescued one of the victims.

Shortly thereafter, the Knightdale Fire Department Swiftwater Rescue Team managed to safely rescue the other two victims.

Aidan Salvatore and Jesse Gentili have lived in the nearby Raven Pointe apartments for several years and have therefore experienced first-hand the dangers posed by this popular seaside resort – including four drowning accidents in the last three months and two within a week in late July.

“No matter how many times people put up signs, people still come here and that puts a lot of people in danger,” Salvatore said.

He said he had been to the beach before, but noticed how strong the current was and hasn’t been back since. Gentili said it feels like the emergency response in the area is becoming an ordeal every week.

“It’s like there are news reporters here every weekend and I wonder what happened now,” Gentili said.

The three swimmers stranded in the river were taken to Wake Med for treatment but are expected to make a full recovery.

ABC11 reached out to RPD to learn more about the officer who entered the water to rescue the swimmer, but the department said he was not available for interviews Saturday.

Meanwhile, residents say: Enough is enough.

“A lot of people drown here. And you know, I don’t like to see people get hurt,” Salvatore said.
