On August 3, 2024, an unusual and tragic landslide occurred near Cooktown in Queensland, Australia. According to reports, a man vacationing in the area was fishing on the river bank near the Annan River Bridge when the slope collapsed, plunging him into the river.

The place where this accident occurred is known locally as Crocodile Bend because a crocodile about 5 meters long lived in the area. Tragically, the victim was attacked and killed by the animal.

The location is said to be approximately (-15.51513, 145.22130) as shown in the following Google Earth image:-

Local reports indicate that the river bank was about 8 m high, but had suffered from erosion in recent years and was considered a dangerous place for fishing.

I have been writing about landslides on this blog for over 20 years, but I have never experienced one like this. It is a deeply tragic event.
