When does Croatian military service begin and how long does it last?

August 18, 2024 – Croatian military service has been a relatively hot topic since its revival not so long ago. When exactly will it start and how long will it last?

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the government will soon reconvene, and next Thursday the prime minister and ministers will meet. The Minister of Defense has finally announced the date when the introduction of conscription in Croatia will begin. He also stated that he and the Minister of Finance have come to the conclusion that “there is no room for savings in equipping the Croatian Armed Forces.”

Defense Minister Ivan Anušić revealed to RTL how long Croatian military service will last. It is scheduled to begin in January next year. He then went into more detail about how long it will last and whether there will be cuts in his ministry due to the consolidation of the state budget.

“The Croatian military service will last two months. It will start on January 1, 2025, and we will simply continue everything that we have already communicated to the public. We have increased the salaries of soldiers and non-commissioned officers. We have also increased their material rights, not only through personal income, but also through daily wages and everything else they are entitled to,” Anušić told RTL.

He continued: “We are equipping and modernising the Croatian armed forces. We are now organising them as we are expected to and as we have agreed with our NATO allies and the powers within NATO. I think that with these changes we will have a much better and stronger image of the armed forces than before.”

We have spoken with Finance Minister Marko Primorac and have come to the conclusion that there is no room for savings in the modernisation and equipment of the armed forces. This is the position of the Croatian government and all politicians, because the security situation we are in does not allow us to save on this front,” he concluded.
