A Raleigh police officer immediately entered the river and rescued one person.

Shortly thereafter, the Knightdale Fire Department Swiftwater Rescue Team rescued the remaining two people.

All three victims were taken to Wake Medical Center, where they were in good condition, according to the Knightdale Fire Department.

A deputy with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office says river levels are still high due to the ongoing effects of Tropical Storm Debby.

Multiple drownings and rescues raise safety concerns on the Neuse River

In recent months, there have been several drowning accidents and rescue operations on the Neuse River.

A series of incidents near Raleigh Beach, including the drowning of a 59-year-old man in July, has prompted local authorities to take safety measures.

Back in July, the City of Raleigh announced plans to build a gate at the entrance to Raleigh Beach and the Neuse River to allow access exclusively to city staff and emergency services.

At least four people have drowned in this area since May 2024.
