Hokies on track to have one of the ACC’s best wide receiver classes for 2025

Virginia Tech is signing new wide receivers for the class of 2025. Four-star players Micah Matthews, Matthew Outten and Jayden Anderson had already committed to Virginia Tech in early August. Fontel Mines, wide receiver coach and offensive recruiting coordinator for Virginia Tech, wasn’t finished yet. Earlier this week, he secured the commitment of four-star player Shamarius Peterkin, making him the third wide receiver in a row to commit to Virginia Tech.

Fontel Mines has been a key player in this Hokies recruiting class. Mines is the 29th best recruiter nationally according to the 247Sports Composite. Especially in this day and age of new NCAA rules, the art of recruiting seems to have been lost. It has not been lost on Mines. Fontel has done an incredible job as a coach and in recruiting, unifying his wide receiver room and earning a promotion to assistant head coach. Under his leadership, the wide receivers have been great after the catch, and if Mines can continue to land top talent, that will surely continue.

The class he’s built is nothing short of incredible. Peterkin is the 208th-ranked player nationally by 247Sports, Outten is ranked 139th and Matthew is ranked 117th. No other school has three wide receiver recruits ranked that high — although Texas will likely join that list after No. 25-ranked Jaime French makes his college decision. It’s fair to say Virginia Tech has one of the best wide receiver recruiting classes in the class of 2025, possibly the strongest.

However, it’s not uncommon for a recruiting class to be dominated by one position. Even just looking back at the Class of 2023, the Hokies have brought in a ton of wide receivers out of high school and the transfer portal. Virginia Tech has brought in Chance Fitzgerald, Ayden Greene, Takye Heath, Marcell Baylor, Da’Quan Felton, Jaylin Lane and Ali Jennings – yes, all in the same year.

Hopefully Virginia Tech’s 2025 recruiting class can live up to its potential, as it’s entirely possible that the 2025 receivers will be better than the 2023 ones. The transfer portal is always an unknown, and more receivers may come through the portal.

This class starts in a very good position and there is still time. Virginia Tech is aggressively pursuing wide receiver Luke Stuewe and although he is listed as an athlete, he would likely fit at Virginia Tech as a wide receiver. This class could be huge for Virginia Tech and this is just the beginning.
